Petersen photography - collage

Welcome to the Petersen Photography Gallery. As a medical photographer by profession for over 20 years (I started when I was 5 – really!), I was trained to look at the scientific aspect of life. Textures, hues, lighting – all of those components were instrumental in producing my images. When I started photographing wildlife some 12 years ago (ok – you do the math), I took that medical training and embellished it to produce images of animals and scenery that were, let’s say a bit different.

I am lucky enough to have pursued my dream, left my full time medical photography position and am doing wildlife photography and tour leading on a full time basis. My first love is watching wildlife and sharing the wonderful experiences I have had with those I meet. Each photograph has a small story that accompanies it that either explains what was happening at the time or why this special species is in danger. If just one of you is touched by the sad eyes of a gorilla close to extinction (see Looking to the Future) or is humored by the look of a lioness digesting a zebra “assuming the position (see A Lovely Way to Spend Time) then I have accomplished my task. Enjoy the photographs – and if you care to join me on safari, check out Trip Departures.
